Our God
The accounts of heaven's interaction with humanity throughout the Bible lead us to view God as loving and compassionate. We see Him setting a universe-wide standard of gracious behavior in the life of Jesus. God's congenial way of treating other beings was acted out among us and defines Love.
Although the Bible portrays God as having limitless power to do anything desired, He does not control humanity's freedom of choice. Love cannot force itself on anyone. Love always allows for rejection. The picture emerging from the stories of the Bible shows God inviting us to love Him because of the kind of person He is, not because He is powerful. "Love is patient and kind. Love knows neither envy nor jealousy. Love is not forward and self-assertive, nor boastful and conceited. She does not behave unbecomingly, nor seek to aggrandize herself, nor blaze out in passionate anger, nor brood over wrongs. She finds no pleasure in injustice done to others, but joyfully sides with the truth. She knows how to be silent. She is full of trust, full of hope, full of patient endurance. Love never fails." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (adapted from Weymouth) This text from the Bible describes the God we worship and admire! It helps us see the reason our church has chosen as our guiding phrase, "Love Grows Here". |
